Our philosophy with Pinot Gris is to make a dry wine with aromatic fruit flavours of pear, guava, nashi pear and peach.

Making great Chardonnay is a source of enormous pride for us. The Winemaking and Viticultural teams have an abiding passion for this classical variety, making Chardonnay a labour of love. Elegance and freshness of fruit define this intense Chardonnay. Aromas of soft juicy pear and white peach play against fine leesy notes while the palate, and long finish, is kept focused by a very well integrated line of lovely acidity. While enjoyable now the taut structure will preserve this wine for a decade in a cool cellar.

The superb 2007 vintage illustrated just how well suited Gewurztraminer is to our Fernhill Home Block. Fertile loams on an ancient, silty riverbed, so prized in New Zealand viticulture, characterise this special vineyard. Planted to a complimentary range of ‘Colmar’ clones from France’s Alsace region we favour the vertically shoot positioned trellesing technique. Strictly managed this method yielded just three tonnes per hectare.

Immediately appealing with a lifted fragrance of red summer fruits and an appetising chocolate and oak complexity. An elegant acid balance sits nicely around a supple core of fruit defining the palate. The tannins sit softly in the background making for a very approachable style boasting excellent varietal character.

A lifted nose rich with the intense varietal characters of dark plum, dried lavender and cedary oak leads into a soft and flavoursome mid palate silky with fine tannin. Flows effortlessly over the palate with a softness and balance before lingering to a long and persistent finish. Enjoy now or cellar for up to a decade.

A fruit expressive Syrah, lively and concentrated, firm yet poised reflecting the excellent vintage. Initially the aromas lift with blueberry and red fruit, completed by characteristic black olive, licorice and spice and saddle-leather notes. The concentration begins at the very front palate, adds depth and flesh to the mid palate before moving seamlessly into the long, restrained, rounded tannins of the finish. Approachable now with aeration yet hiding so much, to unravel over the coming years.

New Zealand’s favourite white takes on a new personality, Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with a bright red berry twist. A dash of the red grape Syrah compliments the pure and intense Savvy fruit in a fleshy, aromatic expression of summer.

The Talisman is made from parcels of exceptional fruit, the best each vintage gives us. Our secret is to craft a perfectly balanced wine using these select parcels which may differ in proportion from vintage to vintage. This enables us to ensure that in Talisman, the sum is always greater than the parts.
